Beauty: Carbon Peel (Hollywood Laser Peel) - My Skin Gym Clinic & Medical Spa [Part 1]

I'm a big believer of trying anything at least once. Which is why I have decided to pluck up the courage and accept this cosmetic laser review! Okay, it wasn't really that scary but before I tried it, I obviously had some doubts about it from those horror stories I heard.

My Skin Gym Clinic & Medical Spa is one of the first aesthetic clinics to open in JB. The term 'medical spa' is pretty apt as you receive top of the line aesthetics treatment from certified doctors who have practiced this for years. It's pretty hard to miss this bright orange signboard as you drive along the crowded areas of Taman Sutera but I guess what is most eye-catching for most people is the fact that you can try out laser services for only RM29?!

My Skin Gym Clinic & Medical Spa is a one-stop centre for all your aesthetic needs. As one of Malaysia's emerging aesthetic clinics, My Skin Gym's team of fully-trained doctors and nurses will attend to all your needs to make you beautiful on the outside, and confident on the inside. Using the latest technology and most up-to-date procedures, expect fast and effective results, even on just your first visit. Everyone deserves to be beautiful!

The overall decor of the place is clean, white and spacious, with touches of orange to match the theme. Doesn't really look like your typical clinic at all. I keep thinking that SG, short form for Skin Gym, stands for Singapore but it is also pretty apt.

For my first consultation, I went with my bf, Edlyn and Audrey. We had the first consultation with Dr Ding, who has practiced medicine for years in Singapore and is fully qualified to perform the laser on our faces. The doctor performs the procedure personally on all his patients no matter how busy he is and trust me, they can get pretty busy especially on weekends!

After consultation, I was brought to one of the many treatment rooms to start the treatment.

These are the two infamous machines that Dr Ding uses to treat his patients. Their names are Erbium YAG and Nd YAG. Cute hor, still got names wan :p They are primarily used for the Duo Laser Treatment but today Dr Ding will be using Erbium to perform the Carbon Laser Peel aka Hollywood Laser Peel for me.

For your information, Carbon Laser Peel uses Spectra laser system to reduce pore size (even areas like the nose), promote even skin tone & texture, aids acne & oily skin and lastly, reduces acne scarring and wrinkles. It is also great for deep cleansing, increased skin renewal and does not stimulate sensitive skin. Carbon is absorbed into your cells and can be quickly eliminated, bringing the 'toxins' along. Kind of like detox for the skin, you would say. The end results is glowing and radiant skin.

I was told to put on a shower cap so that my hair does not get in the way. After they took some photos of my 'before' skin condition, one of the pretty nurses cleansed my face thoroughly to remove all traces of makeup and dirt. It was quite a quick process, nothing fancy.

Almost instantly, a layer of carbon lotion was applied to my face to cleanse it. It doesn't smell and has a gel-like, sticky consistency. I was told to let the carbon sit for at least 20 minutes to let it dry. As the carbon dried, it starts to feel more taut and tacky. It's pretty lightweight though, so I don't really feel anything on my skin.

The carbon lotion is then gently heated with the laser to allow it to be absorbed into the skin & penetrate into the pores.

Now comes the magical part. A second laser is then used to vapourise the carbon by taking away the superficial outer layer of dead skin. This helps to shrink the pores. According to the doctor, due to the thermal effect, connective tissue growth increases as carbon particles exfoliate the skin.

Watch as Dr Ding 'zaps' the carbon off my face! If you ask me how it felt, I will honestly tell you that it does not really hurt. Only the first shot scared me as I was wearing the eye mask and did not anticipate it. Areas that have acne/pimples will hurt slightly more but it's more like an ant-bite, still bearable. It also feels mildly warm as the laser hits your skin. Hmm.. I really can't describe the feeling as it's nothing like I've ever experienced before. As I have sensitive skin, Dr Ding used a very small dosage for me. It's not the kind of 'peel' that I was expecting. Pretty cool to see the black carbon slowly dissipate into thin air just by shooting it with a laser it, huh?

If you're wondering what's this vacuum cleaner-looking thing, it is in fact... A vacuum. Haha. It's used to suck up the excess carbon in the air (I know this cos my bf told me, since I couldn't see with my eyes covered). That part really smelled when the laser started up. It smells like burnt barbeque. LOL. Scary to think that that was on my face. It's a noisy process but effective in removing the airborne carbon.

The whole process took about 5 - 10 minutes only. Dr Ding even had time to attend to at least two more patients before me, so you can estimate how quickly the whole laser process is. After the carbon peel, my face had to be cleansed again to remove the last bits of carbon. It feels quite soothing to have soft, cold bubbles on my face after laser.

So I know what you're thinking. How was the results? Just look at the photos and you'll know! It's as if I went for intensive squeezing at a local salon, except without the squeezing. My face feels sooo clean and fresh after that. My dull skin tone has also greatly reduced, and so has the redness of the pimples. Yay to brighter-looking skin, all within half an hour! Best part? NO redness or downtime at all!

I would recommend this carbon peel for people who does not like squeezing of pimples at conventional beauty salons. It feels as if my skin has been 'unclogged' and pore size have greatly reduced as well. What little pain there is, is tolerable and worth it for clean skin like this! I've tried many kinds of facials before but this is the first step towards trying out aesthetic treatment. I know now why lasers are so expensive, because they do work! Just make sure you are treated by a professional and it will not be as scary as you think. If you don't take my word for it, you can experience this Carbon Laser Peel out for yourself at a first trial price of RM299.
