[Guest Post] 5 Apartment Features to Watch For

It's time to take a break from all the beauty posts lately and get into something more serious. I'm at the age now where I have to start planning my future and property hunting is definitely something to look out for. My guest writer has a few tips to share with you, my readers, especially if you are in the midst of apartment-hunting or are first-time homeowners!

Are you looking for an apartment to own? You might wonder what you should be looking for in an
apartment. If you are in the market for an apartment for sale, check out the apartments listed on property listing sites like PropertyGuru Malaysia.

If you are looking for an apartment to own, you should make sure you have the best apartment for you. You want to feel as safe and protected in your home as possible. Read this list of features to watch out for in your next apartment.

Safety
Your safety is one of the most important factors to consider when searching for a new apartment, according to SF Gate. Make sure that the neighborhoods you are looking in are as safe as possible. Check out the neighborhoods at various times of day and times of the week in order to determine whether the neighborhood and your potential neighbors look safe, friendly and quiet.

Ask these neighbors about the area. Are there any problems, crime or weather concerns? For example, is flooding a concern? If you’re new to the area, determine whether earthquakes, tornadoes or hurricanes are a problem. Does the apartment building allow pets? If so, what types? Are these animals safe? Is the apartment community gated? Is there plenty of security? A 24-hour doorman?

Determine if your potential new apartment is safe. Check the doors and windows to make sure they are properly screened and that the locks work. Ask about potential health hazards like lead paint, asbestos and mold.

Layout
Layout is important when it comes to your day-to- day life in your apartment. Make sure that there are no sharp corner or narrow walkways in the apartment. If you like sunlight, make sure that your apartment unit is south-facing and check out the view from the windows you will use the most and make sure that you like the view. Make sure that the position of the bedrooms in relation to the rest of the apartment works for you, especially if you are going to be living with roommates or family members.

Workability
If you work from home on a regular basis or all the time, the ability to work from your apartment could be a huge concern for you. Is there an office space or room that will allow you to concentrate while you are working from home? If there is no allocated office in the apartment, many people choose to turn their closet or a breakfast nook into an office instead. If you need to do this, does such a small workspace allow you enough room to function and work well on a regular basis?

You might consider investing in ergonomic furniture. You could buy a sit and stand desk or longer work desk, especially if you are sharing the workspace with your roommates or family members. If you are going to be sitting in your office chair a lot, make sure that it is as comfortable as possible.

You should also make sure that your apartment building offers Wi-Fi or that you are able to set up your own Internet connection and that it works well, since you need to use this connection on a daily basis.

Health
Before choosing a new apartment, make sure that the apartment looks as clean and healthy as possible. Make sure that there are no signs of mold, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. You should also check the condition and water tightness around the skylights and windows, according to Apartments.com. Check the kitchen fan and turn on air conditioning systems to check for any unusual smells like cigarette smoke, chemicals or pet odors.

You can also check with the landlord or seller that the apartment will be thoroughly cleaned before you move in. Many landlords offer deep cleanings between tenants. The carpets might be steamed or replaced before you move in, allowing for an overall cleaner environment for you. If this is not the case, you might want to consider hiring contractors to take care of any cleaning issues or simply going with a different apartment, since issues like mold can cause serious health problems.

Accessibility
You should check for various apartment features, to ensure that you have maximum accessibility in your apartment. For example, are the heights of the counters, sinks and toilets okay for you? Are they too tall or short? Do you have enough storage space for your belongings? Are you able to get into and out of showers and bathtubs?

If you have kids, you might want to make sure there are good schools and parks nearby. Also, if you’re a fitness junkie, you should make sure that there is a nearby exercise room, pool or gym for you to get your workouts in.

Looking for a new apartment can be a daunting task, so make sure that you get what you want with these tips and tricks!
