In the blink of an eye, I'm reaching the end of my Invisalign journey soon (10 more pairs to go!). Now, while it's much much more convenient than traditional braces, it's not all roses because this is still a teeth-straightening process after all. When I first started my Invisalign journey, I was mostly in the dark because I didn't know if what I'm doing is right and no one else around me had done this treatment before. Thankfully, my dentist and clinic was just a phone call away if I ever needed help or was unclear about something. Therefore, my top tip is to go to a clinic that has experience in providing Invisalign treatments so that you're ensured of the best care and treatment!
With that being a top tip, I also realised that there are many other tips that I've learnt which I can share with you all. If you're considering the Invisalign treatment, read on!
1. DISCIPLINE is
key!
Because the aligners aren’t fixed unlike traditional braces, I found that
discipline is very, very important in order to ensure your progress is on
track. By right, you’re supposed to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day. Ok, I
admit I’ve cheated a few times cos I’m constantly snacking so I sometimes
forget to wear my aligners after eating But I do make it a point to wear it
before bed and during work. You must also remember to change the aligners
weekly. I find it helpful to mark down the dates on my phone calendar so that I
get a notification weekly (for me, it’s every Sunday night) to change to a new
pair of aligners.
2. Minimise Pain by Changing Into New Aligners Before Bed
When you change into a new pair of aligner, there tend to be a little discomfort. The aligners are designed to move your teeth little by little each week so when you put on a new pair, it can be quite painful or sore because your teeth is not used to this new "position". So to avoid the discomfort during the day when you're busy going about your daily activities, I find it helpful to change into new aligners in the night. This reduces the pain cos you'll be sleeping, and while your mouth will be slightly sore when you wake up, it's better than it being a bother while you're conscious, right? Of course, in order for it to work effectively, you'll have to ensure that the aligners are snug on your teeth, meaning there should not be gaps between the plastic and your teeth. As they say, no pain no gain!
3. Oral Hygiene is Important
It's great that you're still able to enjoy all the usual food that you love while on Invisalign treatment, but it does come with a price. Before putting back on your aligners, you should ensure that your teeth is clean first. Think about it. The plastic aligners are gonna be in your mouth for many hours, it's bound to stain and smell. Minimise this by making sure no food are stuck between your teeth before you put it back on. What I do is keep a "Teeth Care Pack" in my bag so that I can brush and floss on-the-go. Inside this bag are my toothbrush, travel-sized toothpaste, floss, aligner casing and even rubber bands, gel and "chewies" to bite on for better fit when I put on a new pair of aligners.
So here's that I learnt regarding the Invisalign process so far. Hope it's been useful for those who are wearing aligners and/or retainers too, and that it's an eye-opening article for those who are not! 😊
