1. Nasi Lemak
First up, the staple of every Malaysian is our national dish, Nasi Lemak. Fragrant rice cooked in coconut, paired with delicious sambal chili, fried chicken or rendang, and fried egg. Fun fact: You can have nasi lemak from breakfast to supper!
2. Laksa
Every state in Malaysia has it's own version of laksa. But no matter the type, laksa is a must-try because of it's unique, spicy taste! I especially love curry laksa with the abundance of ingredients such as tofu and cockles, with the beehoon soaking up the coconuty curry broth - perfect for a rainy day.
3. Dimsum
As a Chinese, one of the best breakfasts that we enjoy is dimsum. Some dimsum faves that Malaysians are familiar with are har gao, siew mai, egg tart and liu sar bao (custard bun). Dimsum feasts are like a "breakfast buffet" of sorts and a great time to bond with family over a meal!
4. Satay
Satay are essentially meat skewers consisting of chicken, beef or lamb meat, roasted over a charcoal grill so it has that indescribable fragrance when you bite into the tender meat. Satay is best eaten as a supper food, paired with the unforgettable peanut sauce, cucumber slices and ketupat!
5. Nasi Briyani
Nasi Briyani is essentially basmati rice cooked with spices and paired with all kinds of curry, meat and vegetables. There's no rule on how to enjoy this dish or how to pair it, but it is best enjoyed when eaten with your hands (trust me!)
6. Banana Leaf Rice (Indian Food)
As a multicultural society, we enjoy food from other cultures. Indian food is one of the best delicacies you can have, from regular mamak stall dishes such as thosai or roti canai, to more filling dishes like North or South Indian banana leaf cuisine. Every dish is a gastronomical experience for your tastebuds!
7. Assam Laksa
Assam Laksa is another variant of laksa that is famous in Penang. This laksa is unique because instead of coconut based curry, it uses fish cooked in an assam soup base instead, topped with prawn paste for that extra fragrance. The tantalising sour soup goes well with the thick noodles and pineapple, onion and chilli toppings. Definitely a must-have when you visit the 'street food capital' of Malaysia!
8. Char Kuay Teow
Char Kuay Teow is a hot favourite amongst Malaysians and is another famous dish from Pulau Pinang. It is basically flat rice noodles stir-fried with shrimp, cockles, eggs, bean sprouts and Chinese sausages in a special salty-sweet soy sauce. It seems simple to make but the "wok-hei" is actually very hard to master, but also gives the dish its essence!
So there you go, the top 8 dishes that you must eat in Malaysia. Our country is indeed a melting pot of flavours and no matter what happens, food will always be there for us.
